Near Dawn

Remember driving through the night
The top of the Ghia down
Cool air blowing in our faces and
Almost running out of gas somewhere
This side of nowhere

Filtered Viceroys glowing in the wind
Moody Miles wailing in monotone
Fingers finding coins in the space between the seats
Then looking for the all night diner for a coffee
Or just a place for a coke and endless talk

Coffee and coke sipped with no thought of time
Night stars turning toward morning
Then back in the car speeding
Through sleeping towns caught in dream time

Slowly the eastern sky brightened
The morning bird sang his song
And just as soon as light touched us
We were gone
