Basket Swing

Swinging in the garden
a few days after the death
of my friend,
David

I am moved to wonder
at the perfection
of the bark of the tree
which supports
my basket swing

Swinging in the garden
on an arid summer day
I am moved to wonder
at the wholeness
of a blade of grass
and the curve
of the swallow's flight

thoughts turn
slowly gyrating in a wicker basket
slightly above earth
far below sky
